General Snowmobile Discussion / Re: First ride
« on: January 17, 2019, 08:19:04 AM »
Very nice Hal ! I got lucky and took a 6 day trip between Christmas and New Years. Typical early season riding, with some water holes, thin snow spots, etc. But I was able to ride approximately 400 miles in the UP of MI. Leaving again this weekend for a 3 day ride and using MLK day for the ride home. I'm enjoying my new machine as well, but this weekend will be a good cold temp test on my SB 600. It doesn't look overly warm just looking at it, so I guess we'll see..... As long as the snow conditions are ok, I can endure the cold.

In addition, to being a dumb ass and not reading the owners manual (at all). I didn't realize until I rode 350 miles that I had not adjusted the computer to 91 octane gas. I had it set to non premium. So I did feel a slight HP boost that last 50 miles. Not really a boost, more like the sweet spot on the 2 stroke got lower into the RPM and I felt like the power came on quicker.

GB, the owners manual tells you how to access engine temp on the gauge. There is a warning light also. 2nd warning light down from the top on left of gauge. I have been trying to upload pics but something wrong with the site.  You can download a owners manual here if you don't have one.  https://snowmobiles.polaris.com/en-us/owners-manuals/

RD, I have not installed the new flap yet. However I did manage to get around 400 miles on the machine last week, so now I do have some feedback to provide.

90% of the time, I was running at around 135-140 degrees, even on hard pack snow conditions.
However, one day the temps got real hot out, riding above freezing and we had some rain, which made the snow turn to ice. On that particular day the machine got to 162 degrees. Still didn't get a warning light, but did stop a few times to cool down the tunnel. Trying real hard not to kill the machine during break in.

I did the first 2 seasons  2016-2017, I had the Indy6. Under the same condition they brought the temp down 30 degrees. They did ding the tunnel up a little though on the bottom edge where the tunnel/running boards meet. Last year just the longer snow flap and a Ski Doo inline stat in place of the Polaris in head stat. The Polaris cooling system on the 121 sleds is poor. It is totally senseless whatever engineer decided to not have cooling fins on the coolers. Longer tunnels like yours have longer coolers {still no fins though}, plus are used more in powder so cooling is better, but I would definitely do the flap ASAP if I were you and keep a eye on engine temp.

I purchased the flap, but I have not installed it yet (the sled's at my cabin).
I might back off on the scratchers for now, and just monitor the temps.

I assume they have idiot lights that warn you if the temps exceed "x" I know my REV would overhead every once in a while on hard pack and me running a 1.5" lug track.

Did a few laps on the property yesterday. We had 4-5 inches on the ground and got another 6-8 inches yesterday. Just farted around the yard and was able to adjust my secondary after installing a new drive belt. Hoping the snow continues to drop, as my first 7 day trip is scheduled to start the day after Christmas !  :snow:
my brother, I and 3 of our lads will be up the weekend after Christmas.  hope it gets good a few years ago it sucked until ny eve

I'll be up the day after x-mas until new years day.
Maybe we'z can link up in Watersmeet, MI one of those days.... Think that's the half way mark between greek - pork shacks

GB, replace that rear snowflap with this one. Off a RMK. It doesn't attach to the rear bumper like your current one, but use a strap around the bumper riveted to the flap. It keeps a lot more snow in the tunnel for cooling.

Good to know, thank you RD....  :thumbsupsmileyanim:

We had several meltdowns last year here in the U.P....do you guys run ice scratchers? I have them on my 141 Viper and the temps would drop at least 25 or more degrees with them down....my .02

I need to invest in some scratchers, now that I'm running a 144" track
Last few years have been a little weird up in the Yooper..... Last year, we trailered twice about an hour further North to get better snow.

Yeah, I would suggest not busting someone's hunt. People wait all year to take that shot, I don't want it aimed towards me.......

Saw that the Western UP got hit with 30" of snow over the past 5-7 days.

Sucks for deer season that opens this week, and it doesn't help with snowmobiling until after Dec 1....

But hoping it sticks around and creates a nice base, if the hunting rigs don't totally ruin the trails in the next couple of weeks.
