General Snowmobile Discussion / WoW! FFF'NNN Cold
« on: December 31, 2017, 02:17:19 PM »
Was in Vilas County Wi.,  Tuesday through Friday riding. High of -10 Tuesday. Slightly warmer but not by much each day after.  -30 each night. Maybe +6 Friday daytime. Cold never used to bother me, but after loosing 66#'s last Memorial day to now, I was cold!!! Trails decent but early season. Lot of traffic starting Thursday. The Pit stops were all full. It was better pre Xmas week when I was also up. Lakes are all marked now. No snow in site for early January but no meltdowns coming either. Happy New Year all!

General - NON Snowmobile Discussion / ?? I Phone 7: Health App ??
« on: September 27, 2017, 08:47:07 AM »
I bought a I7  2 weeks ago. I use the Health app to keep track of my morning walk. It doesn't give a constant step count or distance in 100ths of a mile like the Pedometer I had downloaded and used on my Android. At the end it will eventually give me a accurate total, but I like the instant counting/update. Is there a setting I need to change, or is it the way it works?

Vilas County announces start date for snowmobile season

   Nick Sabato
River News reporter

ATV season has come to an end, and with bow hunting season in session, that means snowmobiling season is just around the corner.

The Vilas County Recreational Trails Safety Committee has announced that snowmobile trails are scheduled to open on Dec. 12.

The county decided to wait until after the deer gun season, respecting that a large portion of residents are in the woods hunting for those nine days.

"That's kind of a holy time for most of the people up here so we stay out of the woods until then," Vilas County Parks and Recreation administrator Dale Mayo said. "Immediately after the deer gun season, Vilas County inspects the snowmobile trails before we open them. We have 11 clubs and that gives us two weeks while the Muzzleloader season and then the antler season is going on... A lot of our trails are on gated county lands so there are some concerns about opening those gates while there are a lot of hunters in the woods."

Gun season begins Nov. 19 and right now the local snowmobile clubs are clearing trees from the trails and putting up signs.

The goal is to clear the trails prior to gun season beginning before putting the finishing touches prior to opening.

"We try to get all of that done before deer season starts and immediately after deer gun season, they'll run the their trails to make sure we can get through," Mayo said. "Then for each club, the county will go out and inspect their trail just to make sure the signs are up and they are ready to be open. We try to open as a county, conditions permitting."

Obviously, opening on schedule depends on snowfall and the weather getting cold enough to freeze the ground after a rainy summer and fall.

Opening on time is crucial to the area because of tourism. People often come to visit the Northwoods because of the trails, and if they are not open, it could detract tourism.

"We are in a unique area because there is so much tourism," Mayo said. "It's not just a few local riders. We have a lot of people coming to the area, especially early, because generally the Northern part of the state is where the snow falls. Vilas County - our whole industry up here - is tourism-driven. So it's very important to get them open as soon as possible."

One interesting addition to the trails this year is that several clubs have purchased trail counters to determine how many people use them each winter.

This also shows which trails are used most frequently and where riders are travelling, allowing clubs to make sure trails are groomed properly and quickly.
