Winter is getting ever so much closer here.  We've had frost a few times already in the past few weeks and some pretty cool nights. 

RK Mod Shop is starting to get busier. Working on machine #3 already for this season, 4 and 5 come in this weekend.  Can definitely feel the effects of low oil prices as most of my work was dependent on oilfield money and the work and mod list so far is considerably shorter.  Have actually had a few guys call me over the past few months and ask if I'd like to buy their machines back because they are starting to get strapped for pesos.

My neighbours hate me I'm sure...I've had the deck on the truck for 3 weeks now and have hauled 2 sleds on it already..lots of dirty looks.

Decided to go with a continued utilitarian concept for the next new sled. Went steroidal on the Grand Touring Sport 600 ACE I currently ride.

Coming to the garage next fall: A 2016 Ski Doo Expedition Sport 900 ACE. Ordered yesterday.

Waffled over a regular Renegade, the Enduro, and this one. I tossed the Enduro because of its cost, the unknown of the adjustable ski carbide. The Renegade was the same price as the Expy Sport. I traded the R-motion basically for a longer/taller track, wider skis,  and the front radiator fan....all of which I really use up here at different times. And I can carry a lot of chit on this thing with the rear seat removed.

I think you'll like that machine FB.  I have a few miles on one as I demo'd one this winter as I thought I would be building another 4S with the RK treatment.  Held back a bit and am building a second shop this winter.  If I can scrounge some loot up, it would either be the same maching you bought or another 1200 that would be stretched.  900 is nice, throttle is really light, machine feels pretty darn close to a 600 etec in the nose...very little additional weight although the rad might add a bit.  The biggest thing I took away from that machine was the noise..or lack's very quiet and a lot of times you can only really hear the track clips.

Nice machine Randy.  SKS sure is uniquely positioned.

I had a continuing misfire at idle this past weekend that got worse from the weekend before.  It was dropping a cyl at idle and then it started to drop a cyl at WOT.. intermittently.  Was a huge pia to get it to the dealer.....buried trailer pia.  I'm told there was a loose coil pack plug topper.  ???  I gave those a quick look before loading it up and they were on there tight.  Dealer says there was water and corrosion in the plug well.  Seems to brp should be using dielectric on these.  :nono:

Fuse box was similar on our 09's.  No diaelectric grease in there and in really fine snow, seemed to wiggle a little snow in there and would randomly cut out.  Had it happen only once on one machine and twice on the other.  On mine, it happened at about heart dropped for a minute thinking the worst...Once we put some diaelectric grease on every connector we could find in there, problem never resurfaced.

I think a regular key that mounted in a secure place is good enough.  I bought an extra tether for my donkey that cost $6o and it had to be programmed in at dealer.   :thumbdown:  Shnit is getting too complicated.  I'd rather toss this marvel  into a scrapper than diagnose & repair a electronic issue that wont shoot a code.

I like the idea of the DESS Cord.  I have all of our Doo's programmed the same and only one spare key.  Makes things very easy in fall when I want to start one and don't have to fumble through multiple keys.

I know..odd logic..but the last few 3" tracked sleds I've built are only geared for a max top end of about 80-82mph.  My 1200 was geared for about 92-94, not too much more. Gear them much higher and you start to see a lot of belt heat and chains stretch quite a bit.  On the bigger 1200 which I still have, but will be sold hopefully soon, over a 500-800 mile season I can thread in the chaincase adjuster close to 3/8" over the course of the year from stretch.  Usually change chains as preventative maintenance.   

As you can imagine with gearing like that up to 70mph is eye opening and instantaneous.

I would imagine with the low snow and the how hot the Etec's actually run, the lack of snow to cool is getting to them.

1200 is XS plastic sure has me interested in a project...

 I think it looks much better than the XR plastic. :specool: I read that its slightly wider in the side panels and they have some wide flares for wind protection. I think that is a good thing especially for all those pussies who were afraid it would be too cold. :'( One of the mags actually reported that the 1200 in XS plastic was warmer to ride than the XR plastic, just don't tell AJ :whistle:

I wouldn't be that worried about that.  If I build, we will try to fit the narrower XM plastic on it.  It's hard to explain, but in some of the tree riding we do, the XR panels would touch the snow quite early and basically push the track to wash out.  Wind Protection isn't a big deal for me, as we don't do a lot of high speed riding anymore.

I have 4 days of mtn riding in this year, no miles at home.  The snow just isn't here. 

Things I've learned this year..

- The T3 is the real deal.  It is ridiculous how well those run and how far they will take a guy.  In some conditions you need a Race Gas turbo on a shorter track to overcome the 174 with a stock motor.  They work and came setup extremely well.

-I've seen two Vipers this year.  Not sure where they are hiding but haven't proven to be as popular as I expected.

-I know things go in cycles, but there are more Doo's in the big hills than ever.  I bet they outnumber everything else combined at 3-1 right now.

-Snow sucks everywhere.  I was in Revelstoke last week and I bet it rain 6-7" in the 2 days we were there.  Very setup and I can forsee some bad avy activity in the spring.  As it is, feels like spring snow out there right now.  Locals say worst year in 20. 

-Local dealers have very little stock which is great.  I have a feeling snow check is going to be down big time unless something besides the new Pro is released. 

- Currently looking for a sled deck.  After running out west solo a few times the past few years, the handiness of them is unmatched with a trailer.

I have yet to ride a Doo 1200. I considered buying one several years ago. Stuck with Poo because of all the tools and tuning parts I have. The 1200 would definitely be a 4 stroke I would look at again.     One of my buds has a 2014 Viper 129 incher. Nice sled, down on topend power though. Both of those sleds need a factory installed turbo. Is that new AJ, or what you had last season?
I just got it Friday.  The 1200 pulls harder than my 800 to 90.  I don't want to go much past 90 so it works for me.  For lake top end stuff I'd look somewhere else but from 20 ~ 80 the 1200 is a riot.   IMO this motor begs to be hammered on. Sewing machine smooth provides comfort and peace of mind it wont blow.  lol.  The only thing I worry about is the belt....wondering how much torque it will take until it shreds.

IF you read the sled mags they all rave about the r-motion susp.  Sure its good, but I'm thinking my 011 f8 lxr rides about as good but with less x-fer and a stiffer seat.  I don't think Cat gets enough credit on their rear suspension ride on certain models.

1200's don't go through belts...On both my 180hp and 307 kitted machines we were changing belts out at 1500-2000 miles for the sake of breaking a spare in and I bet we are harder on them than the trail guys.  We still have one 180hp 1200 and it just surpassed 14K miles.  It's been boosted since 300 miles.  That is a sweetheart of a motor that works fantastic.

Pretty much zero miles thus this far.  Little guy had more miles on his 120 than I do on my XM.  I've been super busy still in building mode in the shop and doing a little consulting work for a few in the industry. 

We had some snow...borderline enough to go, but a 50mph wind came last week and scalped the fields bare.  This is officially the worst winter we've had in my time. 

Heading to Revy Sunday for a few days..need to get this out of my system.  Taking the XM and possibly a snow bike this go around.

Morning Guys,

It's been a while since I've checked in here.  I've been up to my ears this fall.  We had our second boy in early October and that really put us with our hands full.  I've been wrenching and building sleds for a number of years.  It kept growing and growing and growing over the years....last year was the first year I had to turn people away.  I couldn't handle anymore and I don't want to hire someone to help me and chase them.  I Put 46 sleds through my shop on weekends and evenings last year and a lot of that was major surgery work such as turbo, BB, etc...considerable hour work.  To make matters worse, I developed a side business to that and have an engineering company that works with a few aftermarket sled companies.  I do a lot of stress/strain analysis and R&D work now and I've been offered more work but as I mentioned above, can't take on much more. 

This year I started wrenching right after the August long weekend.  I took a couple weeks off to help my wife out, but I'm still at 19 machines through the shop this year and I actually just finished getting my own stuff ready this weekend.  Yes..I still have a day job...

I've had a few interesting things to work on this year.  Small handful of Vipers with some pretty rank boost kits, few more 1200's with knock control, few Etec turbo's in both 8's and currently working on a 600 Tundra Extreme with boost, and still have my fingers crossed, but I may do a 900 ACE up yet this year.  Sort of waiting to see what happens with the 1200's - whether it goes or stays.  I have about 1200 miles on my XM, very nice machine, but I sure miss boost and for my own personal sled, I won't boost a 2 stroke.  Too hit and miss and I don't want to deal with running 100LL+ locally. 

Luckily for me, our winter has sucked the big one.  We haven't had more than 4" on the ground here yet.  A couple weeks ago it was a few degrees above freezing and I had grass on the front lawn showing.  Poorest start to winter we've had in quite a few years. I haven't gone anywhere to ride, as even in the mountains, conditions are marginal with a lot of junk poking out.  It just hasn't been worth the 8 hour drive yet. 

On the upside, atleast someone in our family is getting some miles in.  Yesterday was his first time out and he did pretty good.  We went through almost half a tank of gas...his poor dad is getting a hell of a workout as the little guy hasn't mastered the concept of steering yet....

I hope everyone has a safe and fun Christmas.  I sound pathetic, but this one is fun with the short people we have, but usually if we have to spend 5 days with family over Xmas I can go riding and get a break for sitting around...I don't get that this year...booze budget might have to grow...  :Bar-Smilies:

Back on Trucks. Here is a review of the 2015's 1 tons head to head. The results are how I would pick then too based on the research i've done on them. Only difference is mine would be a 3/4 ton. I really like what Ram and GM has done with their interiors. Soft touch surfaces and stitching in key areas. The Duramax allison combo has proven steller reliability and performance. What else can be said about a cummins? Just a solid package. The new Ford motor has class leading torque and HP now but also shows more frame twist than they other two boxed hydroformed frames. Also the plastic looking interior is not as attractive or comfortable as the others.

All of the new ones are nice and they all have issues no matter how a guy spins it.  All have more power than the average guy really needs.  I've had this cummins for 7 months and it's the first cummins I haven't really thought about modding yet.  It pulls really well, exhaust brake is as best as they've ever put in a truck, and fuel mileage is getting back close to some of my previous 5.9's.  Interior IMO is ahead of the other two.  Very comfy truck.  I just hope I don't run into front end issues like my 10 did at relatively low mileage.

The PIAA's don't tax the system anymore than the stock bulbs.  The pair I have are 55/60W..same as the stock H4's.

They don't throw anymore than a deep lugged track does.  I had (have) a few sets of the cable, and solid steel, the cable ones I can't make last.  THey keep separating at the crimp.  The wire ones go forever, and replacements are easy to get.  I have both RSI and Generic RSR ones and they throw up a lot more than the Cable ones do.
